To mark two years of making my art, I decided to have a personal reflection and got out a selection of my past stitchings. I began to lay them out (without their black backboards) grouping them as I went.

I was so pleased that I began to pull as many pieces ‘back in’ that I could (from friends, family and UK based collectors) so that I could keep going and keep extending. Initially my intention wasn’t to create an ‘artwork’ but rather to take an opportunity to personally reflect. As I began to put them together something new and exciting emerged. The pieces worked well next to each other without conflict and the look is very ‘JPR’ in style – so I pushed the idea as far as I could.

The group was 206cm x 262cm in size, but as the piece could never be a permanent artwork (as it brought together artworks owned by multiple collectors), I decided to celebrate and preserve the piece by creating a run of limited-edition prints based on the group of 65 stitchings.  However, the reflection didn’t stop there…

Normally my artworks and editions are each titled with the date the piece was completed. This method didn’t feel quite right with this edition as it was formed from stitchings created over a 2-year period.

Whilst the stitchings were grouped and out on display, I spent time thinking about my practice whilst looking at the stitchings. I began to write these thoughts down before distilling what I had written into its most simple form. The resulting four words seem to ‘capture’ the visible and invisible essence of my practice.

 ‘Balance, Tranquillity, Complexity, Noise’

BALANCE - the act of daily stitching brings balance to my life; each stitching must feel balanced before I deem them complete.

TRANQUILLITY – the act of stitching is meditative, taking me to a place of tranquillity as I stitch; the stitchings, I hope, capture this feeling and instil this mood in the viewer.

COMPLEXITY – the act of stitching helps to simplify my life within an ever more complex world; each stitching is simple in form but created from a tangled and complex web of stitch.

NOISE – the act of stitching (as well as the noise of the machine) blocks out all distractions (whether this is noise from my overthinking mind, noise from phone calls/emails or even the ever-constant noise from the news of geopolitical happenings); the stitchings, I hope, allow the viewer the space to do the same, allowing their mind to disconnect from the noise of reality for a moment and just wander within the art.

In developing this print, I wanted to celebrate these two acts of reflection - the bringing together of the 65 stitchings and my thinking on the essence of my practice. The front of the print presents an image of the 65 stitchings and is titled in pencil with the four words ‘balance tranquillity complexity noise’. But there is more - on the back, the above four statements are written by hand in pencil.

The front is the material and visual reflection and the back is the intangible and written reflection. Looking at the front, you might not know what is visible on the back, but it is there – like looking into my art, you don’t need to understand it to like and appreciate it (but there is more to explore should you wish to look).

JPR Stitch has created two versions of this print - a small format edition (this version) and a large format edition.
