Printmaking is a reflective tool within my practice - within this print run I have been trying to answer questions about where I find balance along the continuum from simplicity to complexity in relation to colour, line and shape.
About half way through the process, I was thinking that the quest was to find the print along the continuum where I found most balance and that composition would be the conclusion… As I kept working, especially whilst working on the more complex pieces, I realised that wasn’t the answer. Instead, what I have been doing within each process and within each individual collage/print is to find balance. Within each of the 12 prints, they gradually move from simple to complex as an extra element has been added (colour, line, shapes, angles, etc.) - I agonised over the composition of each, reworking them over and over until I found balance within each piece.
I also deliberated over the display and presentation, I wanted the set of prints when combined to be able to be read in different ways - from right to left or left to right; from simple to complex or from complex to simple, etc. I wanted the viewer to have the ability to find a balance to the order of the 12 that suited them and be able to adapt the display to suit their mood.
The conclusion that I have reached whilst creating, thinking and contemplating these prints is that balance may be found in simplicity and complexity. My art reflects me at a specific moment in time, sometimes I feel like I am in a state of simplicity and other times I feel like I am in a state of complexity. This state guides the composition - but as I create, I work to find balance, balance within my art, balance within the colours, shapes and forms, so that the final piece emanates a sense of balance (to the observer).
The JPR_Stitch prints are created directly from his unique free-hand embroideries. The artist firstly creates a small embroidery on his sewing machine and then uses this as the printing plate. Due to the nature of hand-finishing, the six sets have slight variations between them.
